I’ve been trying out a lot of fruit based Greek yogurt every morning and while Denver is mostly an egg-for-breakfast sort of a person, there is always a plea to save him the last bite at the breakfast table. Because homemade Greek yogurt flavors are really the best guys! While I love yogurt, Greek or regular, I’m always squeamish about picking one of those packaged flavors, however delicious they may be. I can’t read beyond the 13 gms. of sugar or added flavoring agent that most of them seem to have on the pack. This is supposed to be healthy and clean and good for you, and a pack of flavored Greek yogurt probably isn’t. Before I find that one brand that makes me say yes to flavored Greek yogurt, I’m happy making my own and I have a ton of options for you too! Before we get into the recipes for these homemade Greek yogurt flavors, let’s just go over a few details.

What’s the difference between regular yogurt and Greek yogurt?

The process to make regular yogurt and Greek yogurt remains the same. Milk is heated and then cooled to the right temperature before adding the culture and then left to ferment and set. To make Greek yogurt, the yogurt is strained in a cheesecloth to remove whey and lactose till you get a creamy, thick mixture that we call Greek Yogurt. This can easily be done at home. In India, where the temperatures are super conducive, you don’t need a slow cooker to make Greek yogurt, just a dark, warm area in your kitchen where you can leave the yogurt to set.

How do you make homemade Greek yogurt flavors?

I have a simple ratio to make homemade Greek yogurt flavors. If you are using fruit, you need 1/2 cup fruit (pureed) + 1 cup Greek Yogurt + 1 tsp Honey or Maple Syrup (optional). For other variants the amount of seasoning, spices or sweeteners you need to add will vary, which is why I have these six recipes for you to use as a guideline.

How long do these flavored Greek yogurt’s last?

I usually end up buying plain Greek Yogurt and like the brand Epigamia. I make sure to buy the freshest packs and make a few flavors every Sunday . These homemade flavored Greek Yogurt packs last me between 5-6 days when refrigerated. If you are making Greek yogurt at home, the shelf life will be the same. After that, the yogurt starts becoming sour. Just follow these simple guidelines and you’ll be armed with the best homemade Greek yogurt flavors all week long!
