On a dark Halloween nightA mummy dog roamsHungry for naughty little souls A quick post today for an easy Halloween treat: these cute little vegan mummy hot dogs that take just minutes and almost no effort to put together. And you can enlist your little ones to help you make them. I used vegan hot dogs for these, which I usually have around because Jay loves them. They are processed, of course, but try explaining that to a teen. Besides, they are still far better than hot dogs that have meat in them, so I indulge him, probably a little more than I should. I did use my homemade whole wheat vegan puff pastry for these so at least that was one good thing. And he loved them because he gobbled them down. I am not going to get into too much detail on how to make these vegan mummy dogs because the process couldn’t be easier. Here it is, and as always feel free to ask if you have questions. Cook the vegan hot dogs: Boil water and add the hot dogs to it. Bring back to a boil and let them cook five minutes. Fish out the hot dogs and set them on paper napkins or a rack to dry. Prep the puff pastry: Cut thawed puff pastry into long, thin strips and wind them around the weiners (I used my whole wheat vegan puff pastry, which adds some healthfulness, although you can definitely use storebought). Bake: Place the bandaged mummy dogs on a baking sheet and bake in a hot, 450-degree oven for 20 minutes. You can brush on a mix of ½ teaspoon each of maple syrup, nondairy milk and vegetable oil on the puff pastry bandages, if you wish, for a deeper golden-brown color. Make the eyes: Once the vegan mummy dogs are out of the oven, make tiny little eyes for each mummy by dotting with mustard or mayo. Eat! Here’s wishing you and your little ones a fun Halloween filled with all the mummies, ghouls, goblins, witches – and goodies – your heart desires!
